This clash had long been circled on the calendar, but few anticipated the stakes it would carry. It was hardly expected that India could face elimination from their own tournament with a defeat to West Indies, nor that West Indies could book a semi-final berth with a win here. Yet that is exactly the scenario unfolding.

On paper, India remain favourites to bounce back from their solitary setback against South Africa and secure a place in the semi-finals. But the T20 format thrives on uncertainty, where one inspired performance can flip expectations in an instant.

Interestingly, both teams have taken remarkably similar routes to this point. Each suffered a heavy defeat to South Africa and responded with commanding wins over Zimbabwe. Even their scorelines against Zimbabwe were strikingly close.

West Indies are one of the few sides India have not encountered during their dominant stretch that began with the 2024 T20 World Cup. In fact, West Indies were the last team to beat India in a bilateral series, back in August 2023.

Since then, both teams have evolved. India have transformed into a finely tuned winning machine, blending explosive batting with versatile bowling options. West Indies, meanwhile, have assembled a fearsome power-hitting unit that has peaked at the right time. They have struck more sixes than any team in this T20 World Cup, while India trail them narrowly with 63 maximums so far.

The key difference lies in the bowling departments. India boast genuine match-winners with pace, variation and mystery, allowing them margin for error. West Indies, by contrast, operate largely as a containment-based attack. To topple India, they may need conditions — and moments — to fall perfectly in their favour.

Team News – Rinku Unlikely to Feature
